Lomita Community Emergency Response Team

Be prepared, help your family, help your community.

CERT is a group of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) trained volunteers who provide relief to victims of disasters by assisting the City of Lomita in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies. Following a major disaster, fire and rescue resources may be unable to immediately respond to all those in need. In such a crisis, it will be neighbors assisting neighbors until emergency response personnel can arrive. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training provides residents with the skills and tools necessary to take care of themselves, their families, neighbors, and coworkers in the event of a disaster. Through the 20-hour CERT training, residents learn about hazards that may impact their area as well as basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Upon completion of the course, volunteers may register with their respective city to assist in disaster response when the CERT is activated. Participants have no obligation or commitment to respond or act should a disaster occur. As individuals, we can prepare our homes and families to cope during the first critical hours following an emergency. Through CERT, you can help yourself and your neighbors reduce your emergency needs and manage your existing resources until professional assistance becomes available.

Neighborhood Watch Program

The Neighborhood Watch Program is coordinated between the Lomita Sheriff Station and the City of Lomita Public Safety and Traffic Commission. The program is designed to assist in making the neighborhoods of Lomita a safer place to live. The success of the program is dependent on the cooperation of the residents involved.

The Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with local police to prevent and reduce crime in our neighborhoods.

The Neighborhood Watch Program:

  • Teaches citizens techniques to reduce the risk of being victimized at home and in public;
  • Trains citizens to recognize and report suspicious activities;
  • Teaches participants how to make their homes more secure and how to property identify their property;
  • Allows neighbors to get to know each other and their routines so that unusual activity can be reported and investigated;
  • Brings citizens together to address the needs and issues that concern the entire community.

To institute this program in your neighborhood, you are first invited to attend one of our Public Safety and Traffic Commission meetings, where you will have the opportunity to speak before the Commission and meet the representative from the Lomita Sheriff’s Department. Meetings are held on the third Tuesdays of each month at 6:00PM in the City Hall Lomita Council Chambers. At that time, you can schedule a time and location for you and your neighbors to meet with one of the Commissioners and a Deputy Sheriff. There should be at least six (6) neighbors recruited to make this an effective program.

For additional information or questions, please call the City Hall at 310-325-7110 ext. 141.

If you have a non-profit or community event you would like to promote contact me and let me know.
